AA 130: - Marangu Route – 7 days from Nairobi
Sometimes known as the ‘Coca-cola’ route, because it is the most popular route up the mountain, Marangu route is in fact probably followed by ninety percent of all climbers. It has a well-defined path, which has been well set out and where most obstacles have been modified to make them ‘climber friendly’. Accommodation on this route is in purpose built mountain huts providing adequate shelter and even bottled water, beer and soft drinks (at high altitude prices).
Day 1: Nairobi – Moshi
Depart Nairobi to Moshi by Shuttle Bus arriving Mountain Inn Hotel in time for early evening pre-climb briefing on the trek, dinner and overnight. Overnight at Mountain Inn on B/B basis
Day 2: Mandara Hut
After breakfast you will be transferred to Marangu gate [the drive takes about 1 hour] passing through the villages of Marangu, which is located on the lower slopes of the mountain. Once you reach the park gate, you will be registered with park office & start the hike for about 5 hours (12 kilometers) in the natural forest to arrive Mandara Hut 2700meters in the late afternoon for dinner and overnight – BLD
Day 3: Horombo Hut
Early morning breakfast and thereafter make a 6hour trek (15 kilometers to Horombo hut 3700meter. The walk is very gentle through the moorland and heather zone, in well-defined party. Picnic lunch will be provided enroute, dinner and overnight at Horombo hut - BLD
Day 4: Kibo Hut
After breakfast starts the ascent to Kibo hut. The hike is for 6hours (15 kilometers) through the moorland and "The saddle", passing the last water point on the mountain. Picnic will be enroute, dinner and overnight at Kibo hut 4700 meters.-BLD
Day 5: Summit-Horombo
Wake up at mid-night and set off for the summit- Uhuru peak 5896 meters. The hike passes via Hans Meyer cave, Gillman's point and Stella point. This walk takes 8hours to Uhuru peak on scree and ice; 3Hours to descend to Kibo hut and another 3 descend to Horombo for overnight-BLD.
Day 6: Mountain Inn
After breakfast, you continue the descent, passing Mandara Hut down to the park gate where successful climbers will be awarded certificates of achievement having made it to the top! You will meet your transfer vehicle to the Mountain Inn for overnight, Bed & Breakfast.
Day 7: Moshi – Nairobi
After breakfast and transfer directly to the airport for your flight home.
